“It’s been three months since I built my site. How many pages has Google indexed?”

Honestly, I was afraid to ask this question at first. I had written twenty or thirty articles, but my traffic was still in the single digits. Was my content bad, or had search engines simply not discovered my website?

The answer was: I had no idea. Until I opened Google Search Console.

This free tool tells you clearly: how many pages are indexed, which keywords bring traffic, and how your rankings are changing. But the first time I opened the GSC interface, I felt overwhelmed. With so much data, which should I look at? What’s the coverage report? How should I interpret the performance report?

After months of exploring, I gradually figured it out. GSC isn’t that complicated—it boils down to four things: confirm indexing, check traffic, find problems, and improve rankings.

Website owners without GSC are like people who skip health checkups. You might feel healthy, but problems could already exist: pages not indexed, robots.txt misconfigured, poor mobile experience… Google will tell you all of this, but only if you check.

GSC provides three core values:

First, confirm indexing. You wrote 50 articles, but did Google really index them all? If not, which ones? Why? The coverage report in GSC will give you answers.

Second, see traffic sources. What search terms do users use to find your site? What’s the click-through rate? What’s your ranking position? This data helps you discover new content opportunities.

Third, discover and fix issues. Manual penalties, security issues, mobile adaptation problems… Google will actively notify you and provide fix recommendations.

Two Ways to Add Your Website

Open Google Search Console, click “Add property,” and you’ll see two options:

Domain verification: Suitable for those with domain control. Verify once, and all subdomains (www, blog, api, etc.) are included in monitoring. I recommend this approach—it’s more convenient.

URL prefix verification: Suitable when you only have website management rights without domain control. The downside is each subdomain needs separate verification, which is more cumbersome.

Unless your domain’s DNS is controlled by someone else, choose domain verification.

Three Verification Methods

Google offers three verification methods—pick one you can handle:

1. HTML File Verification (Recommended for Static Blogs)

Download an HTML file and upload it to your website’s root directory. If accessing yourdomain.com/filename.html opens successfully, you’re set. This is the simplest method—Astro and Hugo users should choose this.

2. HTML Tag Verification

Add a meta tag to your website’s <head>. If you use a template, find the <head> section and add it.

3. DNS Verification (Recommended for Those with Server Control)

Add a TXT record in your domain’s DNS. This method is most stable and won’t be accidentally deleted.

WordPress users have it even easier—install Yoast SEO or Rank Math plugin for one-click setup.

Post-Verification Setup

After verification succeeds, don’t rush away. There are a few more things to do:

Add Sitemap

Find “Sitemaps” in the GSC left menu, enter your sitemap.xml address (usually yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml). This helps Google discover your new content faster.

Check robots.txt

Use GSC’s “robots.txt testing tool” to ensure you haven’t accidentally blocked important pages.

Set Preferred Domain

If you’ve bound both www and non-www versions, specify a preferred version in settings to avoid duplicate content issues.

Wait 2-7 days, and data will start being collected. Don’t worry—Google crawling takes time.


Index Monitoring — Ensure Your Pages Are Indexed

Coverage Report: Your Website’s Health Checkup

Find “Index” -> “Pages” in the GSC left menu—this is the coverage report.

When you open it, you’ll see four status categories:

When I first looked at this report, my blog showed “35 pages indexed,” but I had clearly written 50. Where did the other 15 go?

I clicked on “Excluded” and found the answer.

Four Common Exclusion Reasons

1. Crawled but not indexed

This is the most common situation. Google visited but decided the content quality wasn’t sufficient, so didn’t index it. Reasons might be: content too short, duplicate content, or website authority too low.

What to do? Improve content quality, add internal links pointing to the article, or build some backlinks. Honestly, there’s no quick fix for this—it takes time.

2. Blocked by robots.txt

Check your robots.txt file to see if you’ve blocked important pages. I previously blocked the /tag/ directory to save crawl quota, and all tag pages were unindexed. Later I discovered tag pages could bring traffic too, so I removed the restriction.

3. Has noindex tag

The page has <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> in its meta tag—Google won’t index when it sees this. Check if this was added by mistake and remove it.

4. Duplicate page

Content is too similar to other pages, so Google only indexed one. You can use the canonical tag to specify which is the primary version, or differentiate the content.

In Practice: Troubleshooting Unindexed Pages

Let’s say your blog has 50 articles, but GSC shows only 35 indexed. What to do?

Step 1: Export unindexed URLs. There’s an “Export data” button in the top right of the coverage report—export all “Excluded” URLs.

Step 2: Check each URL individually using the URL inspection tool. There’s a search box at the top of GSC—enter a URL, press Enter, and you’ll see Google’s assessment of that page.

Step 3: Categorize and handle based on reason. If quality issues, optimize content; if technical issues, fix configuration.

Step 4: Request re-crawling after fixing. The URL inspection tool has a “Request indexing” button—click it and Google will re-evaluate.

After my last troubleshooting, I found 8 articles were “crawled but not indexed” (content too short), 5 had noindex tags mistakenly added, and 2 were duplicate content. After fixing, 10 more were indexed within a month.


Traffic Analysis — Understand Search Performance Data

Four Core Metrics

Find the “Performance” report in the GSC left menu (called “Search results” in newer versions)—this is where your traffic insights are hidden.

When you open it, you’ll see four core metrics:

By query: This is my favorite. What search terms do users use to find your site? You’ll discover many surprises. I had an article titled “Cloudflare Workers Introduction,” but the search term bringing the most traffic was “cloudflare workers tutorial.” What does this mean? Users are searching for “tutorial”—I should add this word to my title.

By page: Which pages perform best? Which pages have impressions but no clicks? The latter are your optimization opportunities.

By country: Where is your traffic coming from? If your blog is in Chinese but most traffic comes from the US, you might need to adjust.

By device: Mobile vs. desktop. If mobile CTR is particularly low, your page might have mobile experience issues.

Data Diagnosis: How to Interpret What You See

Just looking at numbers is useless—you need to interpret them. I’ve summarized several common scenarios:

For example: I had an article with 3000 impressions but only 50 clicks—a 1.6% CTR. What’s the problem? Looking at search results, the title ranked 8th, too far back. Also, the title was too technical, and users didn’t want to click.

I made the title more accessible, added numbers and time-related words, and CTR increased to 3.2%—doubled.

Data Export and Deep Analysis

GSC data is limited to 1000 rows. For deep analysis, exporting data is essential.

Click “Export data,” choose Google Sheets or download CSV. Then you can do interesting things:

  • Find keywords with “high impressions but low CTR” and optimize titles
  • Find keywords “ranking on page 2” (positions 11-20)—these can reach the first page with slight optimization
  • Compare data changes across different time periods to see which optimizations worked

If you know how to use Google Sheets or Excel, create pivot tables and you’ll discover many unexpected opportunities.


Advanced Features and Best Practices

URL Inspection Tool: Your Swiss Army Knife

The search box at the top of GSC isn’t just for searching—it’s a powerful URL inspection tool. Enter any URL to see:

  • Indexing status: Is it indexed? When was it last crawled?
  • Request indexing: Manually ask Google to re-crawl—use this to accelerate indexing after publishing new articles
  • Structured data: Check if Schema markup has issues
  • Mobile usability: How Google views your mobile page

After publishing a new article, I habitually use the URL inspection tool to “request indexing.” Although Google will eventually discover it on its own, manual requests are faster—usually indexing within a few hours.

Mobile Usability Report

If your website has poor mobile experience, this will show errors. Common issues:

  • Text too small, users need to zoom to read
  • Clickable elements too close together, users easily misclick
  • Content exceeds screen width, requires horizontal scrolling

Google now indexes mobile versions first, and poor mobile experience directly affects rankings. Fix issues as soon as you find them.

Page Experience Report (Core Web Vitals)

Google uses three metrics to evaluate page loading experience:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): Main content loading time, target under 2.5 seconds
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): Page response time after user click, target under 200 milliseconds
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): Degree of page element jumping, target under 0.1

These three metrics affect rankings. If your site “needs improvement,” check what’s slowing it down—images too large? Too much JS? Slow server response?

Security Issues Monitoring

If your site is hacked or injected with malicious code, Google will warn you here. If you receive a security issue notification, handle it immediately, or your site will be removed from search results.


Common Issues and Troubleshooting Process

Sudden Drop in Indexed Pages? Check These Five Things First

One day you notice GSC shows indexed pages dropped from 50 to 30. Don’t panic—investigate in this order:

  1. Check robots.txt: Have you changed configuration recently? You might have accidentally blocked important pages.
  2. Check noindex tags: Were they mistakenly added to pages that shouldn’t have them?
  3. Check server: Any recent downtime? 5xx errors will cause Google to pause crawling.
  4. Check manual penalties: Look in “Security issues” on the left side of GSC for any notifications.
  5. Check algorithm updates: Google updates its algorithm several times a year, which might have affected your site.

Most of the time, indexing drops are temporary. After ruling out the above issues, wait a few days and it usually recovers.

Ranking Fluctuations: When Should You Worry?

Ranking fluctuations are normal. Changes within 5-10 positions shouldn’t concern you—Google’s algorithm naturally makes small adjustments.

But if a keyword ranking suddenly drops from 3rd to 15th, pay attention. Possible reasons:

  • Competitors published better content
  • Algorithm update caused authority changes
  • Your page content was flagged as quality issue

What to do? Compare your page with those ranking above you, see what they did. Then optimize your content accordingly.

Build Your GSC Workflow

SEO isn’t a one-time thing—it requires regular maintenance. My routine is:

Weekly check (spend 10 minutes):

  • Glance at the coverage report, see if there are new errors
  • Glance at the performance report’s top queries, note changes
  • Confirm no security issue notifications

Monthly deep analysis (spend 1 hour):

  • Export performance data, analyze CTR changes
  • Find keywords ranking on page 2, pick a few to optimize
  • Find pages with high impressions but low clicks, optimize titles and descriptions
  • Review indexing status of this month’s new articles

Stick with this, and you’ll see your website traffic steadily grow.
