Last week, I opened Google Search Console and saw a row of yellow warning bars in the Page Indexing report: Discovered - Currently Not Indexed. Over 200 pages—Google’s crawler had discovered them, yet refused to index them. Panic started to set in.

The red bars for Error status look intimidating, but don’t panic. Most of the time it’s just a missing required property or a formatting error. Google will directly tell you what the specific problem is—click into the error page and check “Issue details” to locate it.

Honestly, I initially only included headline and author. Later I discovered that adding datePublished and dateModified caused search results to show the publication date below the article title—something like “April 20, 2026 · Easton”—which helps with click-through rates.

FAQ has required properties: each Question must have an acceptedAnswer. Without it, it fails.

I’ve stepped in a pitfall: the text content in Question and Answer must match the actual text displayed on the page exactly—you can’t “summarize” or “polish” it yourself. Google compares structured data against page content, and if it finds inconsistencies, it will flag an Error.

1.3 Got an Error? Walk Through the Fix Process

Step 1: Locate the specific problem. In the Enhancements report, click on an Error entry, and GSC will list all URLs with errors. Select one, then check “Issue details”—you’ll see specific prompts like “missing required property name.”

Step 2: Verify with tools. Google provides two free tools:

  • Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results): Enter a URL or paste JSON-LD directly to test if rich results can be generated
  • Schema.org Validator (validator.schema.org): More detailed structural validation, showing whether each property meets specifications

Step 3: Fix and redeploy. Modify the code and deploy it live.

One detail: after fixing, you don’t need to immediately click “Request Indexing.” The Enhancements report validation process automatically triggers a recrawl. Once you click validate, Google will check.

Page content is too short, too duplicative, highly similar to other pages, or has unclear user value. We can’t fully know Google’s judgment criteria, but one thing is clear: low-value content won’t get indexed even if the crawler visits.

Crawl Budget Limitations

Google has a crawl budget for each website—a daily limit on how many pages it will crawl. If your website has thousands of pages, the crawler may only get to some of them, leaving the rest for later.

Technical Obstacles

Page loads too slowly, server response times out, or robots.txt accidentally blocks certain paths. The crawler may fail to access or get rejected.

New Site Cold Start

When a new website first launches, indexing tends to be slow. It needs to accumulate content volume and backlinks before Google speeds up its crawl frequency.

An important mindset shift: “Currently Not Indexed” doesn’t mean “Never Indexed”. Many pages will naturally get indexed months later as the website gains authority and content is optimized. There’s no need to rush.

2.2 Systematic Index Troubleshooting

Facing hundreds of “not indexed” pages, how do you know which ones to prioritize?

Step 1: Check Each One with URL Inspection Tool

In the GSC top search bar, enter the page URL and click “Inspect.” You’ll see:

  • Index Status: Whether indexed, why not indexed
  • Crawl Status: Last crawl time, whether crawl succeeded
  • Canonical URL: The “authoritative version” Google has identified (if there are multiple similar versions of a page, they’ll be merged to this one)

If a page shows its “Canonical URL” pointing to another address, it means Google considers this page duplicate content and has merged it to another version. In this case, don’t stress—the original page not being indexed is correct.

Step 2: Identify Low-Value Pages

Open the “Discovered - Currently Not Indexed” list in the index report and analyze by path:

  • Are there many tag pages, archive pages, pagination? (These have low indexing value to begin with)
  • Are there duplicate pages with different parameters? (e.g., with and without ?sort=)
  • Are there blank or nearly empty test pages?

These pages shouldn’t be indexed anyway. Instead of trying to force them in, directly block crawling with robots.txt, letting the crawler focus its energy on truly valuable content.

Step 3: Check Internal Link Structure

Do important pages have enough internal links pointing to them? Internal links are the primary way crawlers discover pages. A page buried in a third-level directory corner may never get reached.

My experience: Core articles should have direct link entries from the homepage or first-level category pages. Every so often, check your site navigation and sidebar to ensure valuable content isn’t “buried too deep.”

Many people’s first reaction when seeing unindexed pages is to click the “Request Indexing” button. This solves some problems, but not the root cause.

Each user has a daily limit on indexing requests (Google hasn’t disclosed the exact number, probably several dozen). If you have over a hundred pages to request, you can’t process them all in a day. More importantly: if the page itself lacks quality, requesting won’t get it indexed either.

  • Live Test: Crawls the page in real-time, showing what Google sees right now. This feature is particularly useful—if you just modified a page and want to confirm the effect, you don’t need to wait for GSC report updates; Live Test shows you immediately.
  • View Crawled Page: Shows the raw HTML the Google crawler captured. If your page relies on JavaScript rendering, this feature helps you determine whether Google actually saw the dynamically loaded content.

3.2 Seven Practical Scenarios

Scenario 1: Verify If a New Page Is Indexed

Wrote a new article and want to confirm it’s indexed after publishing? Enter URL to inspect. If it shows “URL is not indexed by Google,” use Live Test to check if the page has issues. If no issues, click “Request Indexing.” Check again in a few days.

Scenario 2: Check If Structured Data Is Recognized

After adding Article schema or FAQ schema, want to know if Google understood it? Enter URL, check the “Structured Data” section. If it shows Valid, no problem; if there are Warnings or Errors, click in to see details and fix according to prompts.

Some pages load content dynamically with JavaScript. Can the crawler see it? Use “View Crawled Page” to check if the raw HTML contains your content. If content is empty, it means JavaScript rendering wasn’t processed, and you need to change your technical approach.

Set <link rel="canonical" href="..."> and want to know which canonical URL Google has identified? The URL inspection tool will directly tell you “Google-selected canonical.” If it’s different from what you set, Google made its own judgment, possibly due to duplicate content or other technical reasons.

Scenario 5: Check If robots.txt Is Blocking Crawling

A page isn’t getting indexed and you suspect robots.txt accidentally blocked it? URL inspection will tell you “whether blocked by robots.txt.” If so, go modify your robots.txt rules.

For small blogs, crawl budget usually isn’t a bottleneck—with dozens or hundreds of pages, Google can crawl them all in a day. But for large websites with thousands of pages, crawl budget becomes a critical resource: you want Google to spend the budget on the most valuable content, not waste it on tag pages, pagination, or pages with duplicate parameters.

Open GSC’s “Crawl Stats” report, and you’ll see several key charts:

How many pages Google crawled each day over the past 90 days. Fluctuation in this number is normal—weekends might be less, website updates might be more. But if you see continuous decline, think about whether the website has issues.

Average Download Time and Size

How long each crawl took on average and how much data was downloaded. These two metrics reflect your website’s performance:

  • Average download time >500ms means server response is slow, crawler might give up waiting
  • If download size is particularly large (several hundred KB), page content is bloated and may need compression optimization

Crawl Response Distribution

Proportion of success, redirect, not found, and other errors. If “other errors” proportion is high, server might be unstable or robots.txt has configuration issues.

Crawl by File Type

How many times HTML, images, CSS, JS were each crawled. If static resource crawl count is abnormally high, you may need to check if unnecessary resources are being frequently requested.

4.2 Crawl Budget Optimization in Practice

The core optimization goal: Let the crawler reach important pages faster, waste less time on low-value pages.

Step 1: Server Performance Optimization

Set a goal: Keep server response time under 500ms. How?

  • Use CDN for static resources (Cloudflare, Vercel both work well)

  • If pages are dynamically rendered, consider adding caching
